I haven’t been back. I thought it would be awkward; it hasn’t. Very rarely do I cross paths with anyone in the congregation, even though I live a few blocks from both the minister and one of its prominent couples. I’ve received occasional e-mails, all of them genial, to which I’ve genially replied; I’ve received neither phone calls nor visits. I’m relieved, though I admit that the contentious part of me is a little disappointed. Strange, then, this coincidence: the same day D, former minister there and good friend, departed after a two-day visit, I bumped into the current minister on the sidewalk.
